    Look if there is ever a rail proposal in this country the default answer should be “yes”

    The unwillingness of the state to build new alignments for railways is kind of crazy.

    When we build motorways to upgrade national roads, we don’t just widen the road.

    Like the western rail corridor shouldn’t just be reopened. New lines should be built too.

    The idea of a new line to Drogheda from Clongriffin along the M1 alignment is in the all-Ireland rail review, so it’s already sorta on the cards.

    I find it hard to believe that a new rail line would truly be easier than quad tracking (but the experts apparently disagree). It’s the section further in from Clongriffin that will be really hard to quad track. It surely wouldn’t be easier than a number of passing loops or rebuilding stations to have additional platforms or passing tracks.

    A new line does offer the possiblity of doing it to high speed standards (or near enough) from the get go, which could be neat. But then you’re loosing the main advantage of a new rail line (serving new populations).

    Keep the existing line along the coast as exclusively for DART to Drogheda via Malahide and Balbriggan

    I’d go further and build a new rail line to the southeast further away from the coast and forget about trying to double track south of Bray.

We should also build/restore train lines along the M2/A5, M3/A509, M6, M8, M11, N13, N15, N16/A4, N17, N19, N20, N21, N22, N24, N25, N27, N28, N51/N52, N54/A3 N55, N56, N59, N61, N67/N68, N69, N70, N71, N72, N76, N77, N80, N81, A4/M1(NI), A6 A7, A8, A20, A22, A26, A28, A29, A32/A505/A509, A44, and A52
