The “robots” are taking over….. /s
Key point from the article,
>Wimbledon’s hand has been forced by the ATP’s decision to adopt Electronic Line Calling Live across the men’s tour from 2025 in the interests of greater accuracy and consistency.
>The women’s WTA Tour is moving in the same direction and with the Australian Open and the US Open having already adopted electronic line calling in 2021 and 2022 respectively, Wimbledon risked becoming an anomaly.
It’s going to be an odd sight the first year, but it does make sense. particularly given some of the line call disputes we saw this year.
This is a good move. The Hawkeye technology already knows if the ball was in/out every time so the idea of giving 3 challenges is madness and this manufactured excitement ruins the purity of the sport.
In or Out is a matter of fact and I find it more concerning that they’ve been pushed to do this rather than implement it regardless.
Makes sense to me, like they no longer have people with stopwatches timing 100m etc
Now they just need the computer to take control from the chair umpire for certain things…
Like enforcing the rules regarding 30 second services so certain individuals (looking at you Nadal & Djockovic) can’t use gamesmanship to slow down points whenever you feel like fucking about by taking 10 minutes to serve while you pick every atom of your body or keep checking that balls do indeed still bounce!
I will genuinely miss the challenges though. Especially as it zooms in and looks slightly sharper graphics than the year before.
And people will *still* get their knickers in a twist, because there’s nothing fans of any sport prefer more than having a go at officials. Even if the official is a computer.
Now do it with football and watch people erupt in rage.
The uniforms are so iconic but I do understand that times must keep moving I guess.
Bit of a shame to lose the tradition and the uniforms. US Open looked a bit bare this year without line judges and I would say they’re more important to WImbledon
I often watch Wimbo puzzled as to why some of those line judge units are content to be on telly when they look ready to have a stroke or some other medical episode.
Just been thinking, it’ll be the ball boys/girls next. They’ll replace them with AI RC cars buzzing around to collect the balls instead.
Then we can watch all the erroneous calls made by the computer and be outraged.
