Agreed. NATO is braindead like Macron once said. But it would only work if we can make Ireland and Austria agree, and good luck for those pursuing that.

That’s a nice slogan. But organisations like the EDA have been running for decades, and every time somebody attempts a tiny little bit of collaboration, nationalists say “*Oh no, we need to keep subsidising our own shipyard for sovereignty… we need our own sovereign production of 5% of an F-16… but we’ve always trained that way, it’s our national tradition…*”

To be honest, it’s impressive that the EEAS exists. If millions of people actually knew about the EEAS, they’d invent a reason to object to it. 🙂

  4. People calling for an EU army: plenty

People with an actual plan to make it a proper, functioning fighting force no matter what happens: 0

Shit like this is just like a politician screaming: “my goal is to make every rich!”. Ok, cool, now tell me how.

At the end of the day, what hurts the EU defense force argument is that we already have things akin to this. The UK-led JEF, is all about interoperability and joint exercise for instance.

It would also need a supreme commander. There are also forces far, far better equipped and trained (France, UK, Poland etc) than others (Eastern bloc, Portugal, etc) that would inevitably be doing the heavy lifting for years until catch-up.

Although not as bad as it once was, still some EU based NATO countries still struggle to even hit their 2% target after a major ground war against their obvious adversary. The appetite doesn’t seem to be there.

Even the top tier forces in Europe like UK and Germany are absolutely bogged down in bureaucracy and red tape in terms of manufacturing and procurement I can’t imagine how much chaos it would cause.

I would love for it to happen. Alas perhaps it would only occur in a world ending scenario unfortunately.

The only way I see this happening is if NATO breaks up. Otherwise there isn’t a big enough incentive to change things. Just a lot of talk from politicians.

Been in this sub for years and like once a week there is some politician calling for something like this yet nothing every happens.

Europe should drop NATO, and then it will be forced to come up with a new defense posture. Otherwise this is just wasted breath that will go no where like the last 100 times this was brought up.

  7. Best polish politician and probably one of the best diplomats right now

easy for poland to make such statements when they are not the ones who will be paying for it.

Before an Army , we need a unified government, strong and capable to defend Europe. And that is not going to happen any time soon.
Foreign interests from France, UK, Germany ,  Eastern Europe or Spain may be the oposite with Russia, northern Africa, Israel ,  Middle East, Taiwán, etc.

If the EU army is anything like the EU it will be dysfunctional to say the least.
