Mary stood and watched with devastated eyes through the crowd that had gathered at the scene of the tragedy. She lost everything: her home, her family, her childhood. Right in her eyes
tortured and killed her father, mother, grandmother… Her hometown, Bucha, witnessed the inhuman atrocities that left scars on her soul forever.
Ukrainian soldiers who freed the city from Russian occupiers tried to talk to her, calm down. But their words seemed distant, unclear, like whispers through thick fog. Mary just couldn’t accept the reality of what had happened.
The Buchan Massacre, or the Bucha Genocide, is a mass murder of Ukrainian civilian population accompanied by kidnapping, torture, rape, including children, and looting. These crimes were committed by the armed forces and other formations of the Russian Federation during the Russian-Ukrainian war in March 2022. Despite repeated claims that Russia attacks only military targets, more than 637 citizens of Bucha became victims. Ukrainian authorities called it a genocide of Ukrainians and appealed to the International Criminal Court to investigate these events.

On the streets of the city lay killed and tortured people. Mary saw their faces, their paralyzed bodies. She knew those memories would stay with her forever.
Ukrainian police launched an investigation, considering a significant territory a crime scene. Witness testimonies and found evidence indicated that many people were killed with their hands tied behind their backs, which proved the occupiers’ atrocities. City Mayor Buchy reported that Russian military had shot civilians into a pot, mercilessly and cold-blooded.
Washington National Defense University professor David DeRoche said the intentional killing of civilians, as in this case, is a war crime. Russian military in Bucha purposefully killed people on compiled lists, helped them in this local collaborators. What happened in Bucha will forever remain in the memory of Ukrainians and the whole world as genocide.
Mary stood among the ruins of her life, among the wreckage that once were her home. She knew the world would never be the same. But she also knew that in her heart burned an unbreakable faith that Ukraine would be reborn, that truth and justice would prevail. This pain, these losses will never be forgotten, but they will become the basis for a new, stronger Ukraine

  2. With gifts like this, does the Vatican declare where the painting will be hung?

I feel like John Paul II would have had the fortitude to do the obviously correct and heartfelt thing and firmly denounced Russia in totality for this invasion. It probably wouldn’t have been hard considering he was Polish, but still, being a “man of God” and siding to any degree with barbarians is reprehensible.
