Mazepa switched sides and betrayed Peter I of Russia. He was then cursed by the Russian Orthodox church, excommunicated and died in exile. The battle of Poltava was lost by the Swedes. Karl XII spent several years in exile after that battle. This is probably not the best example of a successful war against Russia.
