BREAKING: Man who was once trapped in authoritarian country shocked as exactly the same thing happened on his return

The fact there’s actually an advocacy organisation called Detained in Dubai should make you question if it’s really worth going there. We keep hearing stories like this, and sometimes much worse.

> But when he did not show up for work, he was registered as “absconded” with the UAE authorities, which meant he could not leave the county.
Man shocked to find vile slave state does not have great employment laws.

Going to Dubai for any reason truly the ultimate red flag. Hypercapitalist slave state where you can’t even be mean online.

UK nationals have literally been detained and tortured in solitary confinement, and given life sentences for just being in Dubai. Wrong place, wrong time and totally innocent.
I’ve no idea why anyone would ever step foot there.

This is like the director’s cut of Shawshank, where Andy goes back to the prison after his escape to say hi to the guards and gets arrested again…

I do not understand why the British government doesn’t provide stronger travel warnings about the UAE. There have been horror story after horror story but nothing….sure it’s nothing to do with wanting some of that sweet sweet oil money investment.

Apart from the typos in the article, my B.S.-meter is pinging a bit: he went to Dubai to work in a dog grooming salon?
And then went back, to do “scout volunteering”? In the one country he knew he’d faced legal issues?

What is it with so many news articles about dumb people?

I’d never even set foot in the country personally, let alone work or live there.
Far, far too many stories about completely insane things like this happening, passports being confiscated, etc.
Even the original story of him taking time off work with a doctors note and his employer being able to list him as ‘absconded’ so that the authorities get involved is nuts. He was a dog groomer for fucks sake, it’s not like he was AWOL from the army.

The specifics of this case aside who would go and work on a country where your employer has the power to register you as absconded if you leave the job and the police arrest and detain you?

What did the review say? I skimmed the note and couldn’t find that detail

As far as I can tell, Dubai is set up such that 90% of people will break a law at some point. Then if they suspect you of a crime they dont need to go through the shit of proving it because they can detain you on the law breaking.
So it’s likely the real issue here is this man is suspected of a more serious crime and he probably hasn’t even been told and definitely won’t get a chance of justice
This is shocking and people who go there from liberal societies need to be more aware of this risk. Also this is the issue the uk government should be lobbying on, not ‘stupid’ laws.
A lot of commercial contracts work in a similar way where the dominant party ensures the other party will always be in breach in some capacity to allow them grounds to terminate whenever they want however trivial

NO SYMPATHY!!!! Why do people go to these despicable countries knowing that they just make up accusations and jail people!!! The amount of people that have been arrested/ charged with crimes they haven’t done is extremely worrying and should serve as a warning to anyone ( unless your famous or a millionaire) from going!! No sympathy , don’t go!

Why are there so many typos in the article? Is this what the BBC is about these days? Also what does scouting mean if he’s a dog barber??

When are we going to just say X? Sometime in 2027?
