Back before half the country drank the Kool aid from the Kremlin sold via Independents4change, the NationalPartei, PB4P.
The only national interest served by Ireland being demilitarized and outside of common European defense structures, is the Russian national interest.

When we would go for a walk at the seaside, my dad used to let on that he could see a periscope from a soviet sub in the water, and of course us eejits would spend ages trying to look for it! Perhaps he wasn’t that far wrong…

In 1984, an Irish naval ship fired “almost 600 rifle, machine-gun and autocannon rounds during the pursuit” of the Spanish fishing trawler Sonia, which sank a short time later.
