“The paper has learned from the National Tax Office (NAV) that in 2021, a total of about 14 million parcels arrived from non-EU countries (of which 1.2 million were destined for Hungary, while 12.9 million went elsewhere in the EU), but by 2024 this number had gradually grown to an astonishing level: in the first nine months of the year, a total of more than 95 million such parcels transited Ferihegy airport, but only 11 million of these were destined for Hungarian recipients, the rest were sent to other countries. The vast majority of the parcels come from Temu and Shein, which have taken the European market by storm.

Experts argue that the geographical location of Budapest provides a very strong basis for the development of the role of a distribution hub. They explain that the relative proximity of Hungary eliminates the need to transport goods two more hours by air from Asia to a Western European airport and then another 16-24 hours by road, making it possible to distribute them directly from Budapest. Another source of the paper, however, believes that “there must have been a huge lobbying effort behind Far Eastern online retailers choosing Hungary” which fits perfectly into the Hungarian government’s strategy of ‘Eastern opening’. ”
Good! Even if we no longer become friends with Hungary in this life, i respect Hungary for their path. They are simply looking for alternatives and looking sharply into the future. It’s no secret that Asia is the economic future, so there’s no point in being hostile to them. The EU is not what it should have been anyway. In my country, for example, they just exploit workers and companies fuck off when wages go up. In addition, the EU is not interested in making investments that promote the economic future in Eastern Europe. Hope our next government will follow this.
Well Budapest is late as usual.
Times They Are A-Changin. The trade with China and Russia are about to be down scaled. Might take some years. They should have aimed for Souht America if any.
Late as usual, and on the wrong path.
Orban is bought by Putin and Xi
Hungary should be treated like the Trojan horse that it is for autocracies and corruption
Knockoff Vienna becomes Europe’s knockoff capital.
Ok, so my kids won’t be ordering that stuff anymore. We won’t support fascism.
Budapest airport has been number one for imports from aliexpress for 2 or 3 years now.

Of course Russia’s ally lets russian ally in
Wonder what the deal was there?
People in the comments spitting on Orban and Budapest while they and their relatives and friends continue to order stuff from Temu…
The point has flown right over your head buds!
With this mentality Europe will never change. Virtue signaling hypocrites is what we are as a continent.
Never ordered anything from temu. Stopped ordering from aliexpress years ago
Guess we need to bring back customs for Hungary.
Not sure if I should be proud about not having known about Temu until now or if I have some catching up to do…
Can Poland please speedrun building their transport hub airport.
Guys guys guys, if you are so angry then maybe you can do something. Maybe impose tariffs or something, just saying.
Actually Hungary will become an even bigger hub for goods transportation from the East towards Central Europe. With the help of China, a new (and, most importantly, highly efficient) rail corrior is being developed across Serbia towards Budapest. It will undercut current rail transportation routes in terms of efficiency.
China also “bought” a major port in Greece and invests in infrastructure along certain designated corridors. It is likely no coincidence that the investments are largest in non-EU countries such as Serbia, as well as Hungary which has a delicate relationship with the EU, to aay the least.
I don’t want to judge because that’s not my expertise. All I’m saying is that Hungary’s role did not surprise me at all — and that it is highly interesting to see how geopolitics reflect in infrastructure investments.
One more reason not to buy stuff from those platforms (besides the quality and the carbon emissions).
You have obviously not travelled in some more rural places in China. But that was not my point. Lets stop here. You won’t get it either way.
And what about handmade shoes? Can I still get handmade shoes in Budapest for very low prices? Back in the early 90s, after the collapse of the UdSSR, a lot of western people, especially business people who travelled to Hungary for the first time, found out that you could get very good handmade dress shoes for men, for instance a pair of “Budapester”, for very low prices. Is this still the case? I remember that the whole production for the German shoe band “Dinkelacker” is located in Hungary. I do not know if this is still the case.
Yes and?
