    The news of her death was announced by Kaynak Publishing with the statement, “We have lost the Last Sumerian Queen, our esteemed author Muazzez İlmiye Çığ.”

    Who Was Muazzez İlmiye Çığ?

    Muazzez İlmiye Çığ, Turkey’s first female Sumerologist, was born on June 20, 1914, in Bursa.

    In 1926, she gained admission to the Bursa Girls’ Teacher Training School through an exam and graduated in 1931, at the age of 17, as a primary school teacher.

    She worked as a teacher in Eskişehir for about five years before enrolling in the Hittitology Department at Ankara University’s Faculty of Language, History, and Geography in 1936.

    After earning her diploma in 1940, she began a decade-long career at the Ancient Near Eastern Antiquities Museum, specializing in the museum’s archives, which housed thousands of untranslated and unclassified cuneiform tablets.

    In 1960, she conducted a six-month study at Heidelberg University. In 1965, she transported the Hittite exhibit from Rome to London. She retired in 1972.

    After retirement, Muazzez İlmiye Çığ lived abroad for a time and participated in the Assyriology Congress in Philadelphia in 1988. She translated Professor Samuel Noah Kramer’s book History Begins at Sumer into Turkish, which was published by the Turkish Historical Society in 1990 under the title Tarih Sümer’de Başlar.

    Married to M. Kemal Çığ, the director of Topkapı Museum, between 1940 and 1983, Muazzez İlmiye Çığ was the mother of two daughters.

    A Turkish archaeologist, linguist, and author, she conducted studies on Sumerian and Assyrian civilizations and was known as one of Turkey’s leading advocates for women’s rights.
