Sortavala was a prosperous Finnish city and the heart of Ladoga Karelia. It’s located on the shore of Lake Ladoga. Following the Winter War, even though the Red Army never ventured there, the city was ceded to the USSR and all of its inhabitants fled to Finland. The city itself had a population of 4 710 and its rural municipality (Sortavalan mlk) had a population of 21 487, at the time the USSR invaded Finland.

It became a part of the newly formed Karelo-Finnish SSR and ethnic Russians and other Soviet peoples from the inlands moved in. The city was liberated by the Finnish Army in 1941 during the Continuation War, but was lost again and for keeps with the Moscow Armistice in 1944. Since then, the city has been part of the autonomous subject of Karelia, but has lost all of its traditional Finnish aspects.

The city and surroundings should be returned to Finland 🇫🇮!

The narrative that Russians came as liberators of Europe has been falsified for most part. This certainly was the case in Karelia.

And then Russians come in and bring their culture of destructiveness with them.

If this sub continues this downward trajectory, in a few years it will be full of Germans posting old photos of the “German cities” of Breslau, Danzig, Kattowitz, Königsberg, Pilsen, Aussig, Brunn, Karlsbad…

Your grandpas were Nazis, you lost territory, deal with it!

I was there 3 times since 2020 and it’s a very beautiful place! Nature and city are gorgeous.

My grandfather was born here, I hope one day we can drive out the invaders and once again call it home.

To some commenters in posts like this, seriously think what you are saying and who might be reading the comments and use you as their propaganda. The current borders are Finland, that’s it! Don’t be like our shitty imperial neighbors. Keep history in history and accept it, move on. That said, history is interesting and it can be presented as such, let’s just be clear about it.
