If for no other reason sign up for the pupil premium, it could help the school out no end with extra funding, personally I think every child regardless should get a free school meal, then get them to opt out if they want

I don’t want children starving.
I don’t understood why, as a taxpayer, am paying for this.
As such – provide food when needed but then there MUST be a plan.
If a child isn’t being fed then social services need to be involved.
We’re literally patting ourselves on the back and knowingly sending a child back to an abusive home. It really doesn’t matter WHY the child isn’t being fed.

I think auto-enrollment is a good idea. Too many people are not claiming the support they should get based on their needs because too often the government sits with its thumb up its ass waiting for people to go out of their way to claim things they should get as a matter of course.
Leaving aside the question of free school meals which muddies the waters, any benefit that is afforded to qualifying people should be provided to the recipient and responsibility for that provision should be on the government, not the individual to request it.

I am a Catering Manager at a high school and I see it everyday, pupils coming in and not having breakfast and having to give out meals for free. It’s horrible to see and it’s getting worse. This auto enrolment sounds like a good idea but would cost a fortune. I have 7 staff members in my kitchen and we provide free bagels at breakfast then we have break time foods and then dinner time meals to make fresh everyday. We provide 260 hot meals a day plus around 200 sandwiches. We have around 1000 pupils in the school so if this was to go a head we would need more staff and the kitchen area would have to be made bigger. That’s more new ovens to cook the extra volume of food more storage space, we would need 2 walk in fridges and freezers to store all the food. This costs a lot of money. My team and me help out all we can to try and make sure all pupils get a hot or cold meal everyday even if they have no money and would never let a child go hungry. I don’t know what the answer is but this idea would not be easy to implement with the state of school buildings at the moment, it all costs money that schools don’t have.
