    Moikka!
I am using a throwaway just for added privacy, and this question actually is regarding my pending citizenship application, so apologies if you aren’t the correct people to ask, but nevertheless I will pose the question anyway.

My application entered into stage 2, käsittelyssä, a few weeks back, and I was wondering if it’s possible to shed some light on what is happening in the stage? Especially considering there have been no requests for additional information. I understand that some things take time and I have read all of migri.fi on the topic, but assuming this is not a Finnish authority you are waiting on, what information might migri request from my home country, or any other information that might not be clear?

If you cannot give any detailed answers regarding this, then just know that I appreciate all the work you guys do! I have never had a bad experience talking with any officers there and I hope everyone at migri has a nice weekend 😊

Asking on behalf of a friend; They’ve completed a master’s degree & currently working in a cleaning company as a cleaner, with a net income of 1350€. Can they apply extended residence permit on basis on work, with degree completed category.

And whether the permit granted will have unlimited open work permit. Thanks.

Asking on behalf of my acquentince in her own language

“I came to Finland with my spouse. My spouse permit is Type A and it will expire soon. I am student here with Type A permit also. we are non-EU /non-EEA. the questions are-

    1. when should my spouse apply for extension of his permit.? eg. if his permit expires on April 2025, in which month should he apply for a smooth and danger free process? The family ties remains same as before.

    2. According to the latest amendment of the financial resource, do we need to have financial resources for both of us or only for my spouse.? Eg. I did bring 6720 Euro and he brings 8400 euro when we arrived at Finland. Now do we need to have 9600 eur + 7320 euro for our disposal? or the spouse resource(The amount 7320 euro) is enough

    Hello,

I graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Finland. Now I obtained a permit to look for a job and it’s valid for one year. I know that the permit to look for a job can be up to two years. If I don’t find a job, can I extend my permit next year on the basis of looking for work and get a second year, or is this extension given only once.

    Thank you in advance

I have a student permit type B. I have started working in my field of study, but I have not completed my education yet. Can I change my permit to type A?

If I enroll in workplace studying (oppisopimus), do I need to change my permit?

As a context, I already have a degree in Finland obtained a year ago (2023). After that I got a scholarship for masters and started this autumn (I now have a student visa). However, due to mental stress and other personal challenges happened the couple of months, I want to just focus on work full time. I have a job offer waiting. My question is, should I apply for an extended permit to work with a degree in Finland? And will the work contract suffice or do I need payslips from my first few months to support my application? Thank you.

Hello, I’m an EU citizen who applied for residence here in Finland, since I’m a master’s student. At Migri everything went well and they told me my registration was successful and didn’t need to do anything else….but when I tried to open a Finnish bank account the bank told me that the Migri papers and the official emails they sent to me were not “enough”. They want me to have a “physical” proof of my Finnish social security number….but I don’t know how to get it and at Migri they told me I didn’t need to make a Finnish ID card.
Will I receive new emails with this code or should I do something to address this issue?

I came to Finland with a student residence permit but I changed to a different university (from scratch) after 1 year. In Migri’s website I saw that I do not need to report it since it is a Finnish university (Aalto). First, I would like to ask if this is right?

Secondly, my reesidence permit is expiring at December 2025 but I will still be an university student at the time (official graduation date is May 2026). Should I apply as usual to extended residence permit or is there any other procedure for such cases?

    Thanks!

I am currently studying a degree with tuition paid in a UAS with type A permit, now my current permit will expire in Dec 2026.
I have gotten another study place in same university with study right until 2029.

I hope to quickly finish the present course by next spring semester so I can start the new degree.

I also have a permanent part-time job with min. of 15kk/3vkk.

    My questions
    1. Do I need to change my permit to…what kind,  especially when I want to study tuition free in the next course starting from Sept 2025.
    2. I hope to bring my family too (husband and daughter). Will this have an effect on their coming.
    3. If I decide to forfeit the new study right, what kind of permit will I get and how many years will I get based on degree completed in Finland.
    Thank you

If I plan to initiate a startup business while staying in Finland with a study permit what steps should I take? Do I need to give up my study permit and apply for another category?

I have seen there have part time Masters Studies option which need near about 2.5/3 years to complete, If I will enroll it, after completion of my degree will I be allowed to apply for post study work visa?

    Hello!

Your decision to create this AMA is greatly appreciated 👍

I am not an EU/Switzerland/UK/US citizen, but I have a temporary residence permit in EU country for studying untill the august of 2025.

I am expected to enroll into university in Finland in spring of 2025.
Does my old permit affect my application for residence permit in Finland or I should just make an application as if I didn’t have one?

Additionaly, I couldn’t find “Extract from the Crime Register from country of origin” in the list of required documents.
Is it needed, and if it is, would I have to provide two extracts because I had a permit in one country and the citizenship in another?

    Thank for the answers!

    Hello!
I got admission here in Finland. I’m the main applicant. Me and my family (spouse and a 1.5 year old daughter) applied together, they both are dependents. I got the decision within a week but my family is still waiting for the process. Their decision is pending since 2.5 months and it’s going to be 3 months on 5th December. I have sent e-mails to the migri but got no response.
I had requested to please look into my matter as there is no one in my home country to look after my daughter and there many students who are waiting for their families.
As a student this unexpected and long wait without any queue system is affecting our mental health and well being here.
To cut the story short, we are many students waiting for our family decisions which is taking much more time than expected. Please proceed our cases and do let us know :
1- when we would be able to receive the family decision and see them??
2- Also we’re seeing there are many families (student cases not the workers) who are getting the decisions altogether who applied later than us. Isn’t there any queue system followed for decisions?
3- How much does the DNA actually takes time? As many are getting decisions within a few weeks and many are waiting for months?

Hope you’ll answer above all and consider it as well.
    Thanks in advance!

The University of Helsinki has open university courses that allow students to get credits remotely – if I pay a hundred euros, I could have half a dozen credits on a transcript with the university. Could these credits help obtain a student visa without going through the traditional university admissions process?

  17. Traditional_Toe_3578 on

hei, it’s been 3 months already and my application is still in waiting for process. Can you please tell us that at the moment which duration’s application are being processed? migri said we will receive a decision on our applications in 1-3 months but in almost 3 months my application is still waiting for processing. for this reason i couldn’t start my studies in lapin amk this September and deferred my semester to autumn 2025. still waiting for my decision. approximately when will i get decision on my rp application for studies?

    kiitos.

Thank you for hosting this AMA! I submitted a reapplication for a student residence permit in early September after receiving a negative decision earlier this year due to concerns about financial proof. I addressed the concerns in my reapplication by providing detailed bank statements linking my sponsor’s funds to my account, her employment documentation, pay slips, and proof of tuition payments.

My application status has been “waiting for processing” for over 68 days.

    1. Is it common for reapplications to take closer to the full 90 days, even when issues from the first decision have been addressed?

    2. Are reapplications treated differently from first-time applications in terms of processing time or scrutiny?

    3. Would the urgency of an upcoming tuition payment deadline have any impact on the processing of my application, or should I proceed as though it will take the full 90 days?

    Thank you for your insights!

Hi, I would like to know it’s been more than 90 days since I have proven my identity and still I didn’t receive my decision for the first residence permit for study. My application in enter Finland still shows “waiting for processing”. This has been a very stressful situation. And when I contact migri they always ask to wait and they are not in a position to give an exact date which they could solve my case. I’m writing this after waiting for so many days patiently. It will be much appreciated if you could solve this matter ASAP I’m eagerly waiting to join the university. Thank you.

How long will it take to make a decision for student resident permit applicants? We visited VFS India at the end of September 2024. Some applicants were granted positive decisions, while others were not received

Hi, is it possible to get the resident permit for student( if you get selected ) again even if you are deported 6 years back for not getting the extended residence permit? And how are the chances of getting the positive decision if you full fill all the financial requirements? And if you get the positive decision, would it be the same social security number or different?

Some Questions of mine Are here

    1. We had our appointment on September 9th, and my wife received her decision on the 13th. However, my daughter (aged 2) and I are still awaiting the processing and decision. How much longer can we expect to wait for a decision?

    2. Some families who had their appointments after September 9th have already received their decisions. Is there a specific queue, or are decisions being processed on a case-by-case basis?

    3. Given the current situation, how much longer should we anticipate waiting for a decision on our case?

  27. Ok-Oil3856 on

I have done vfs on July 24 but I haven’t got my decision yet why it’s taking too much time to issue student resident permit it’s been 4 months since I am waiting?

    Hi!

I’m from outside of EU and doing my PhD in Finland. My residence permit has been granted on the basis research work and ends on December 2025. What are the requirements for me to apply for a residence permit for looking for work after completing my degree?

Also, I have a Finnish partner. We are not married or lived together. I’m aware that there’s a residence permit on the basis of romantic relationship but it has quite many limitations on what kind of jobs I could have in comparison to a residence permit on the basis of marriage. Is there a reason for that? Also, is it possible to say how likely is Migri to give a permit on the basis of a romantic relationship without the couple living together?

Thank you in advance for your answers!

Hello, I have been waiting for my student and family decisions for 15 weeks now. My family & I faced a VFS interview on 06th August in New Delhi. It has been more than three months/ 90 days. I am attending my lectures online from Sri Lanka. May I know when my family (Husband and 6-year-old son) will get the decision? We need to prepare to go there as soon as possible to join my lectures, as I am following a degree with more practical studies in the laboratory.

As of today the migri says that “At the moment, we are processing applications of those who have proved their identity on 12 August 2024 or later.”, but what about the previous pending decisions like ours.

    Thank you & Best Regards,

    Pravini

Why is it taking so long to provide a decision on resident permit? It has been more than three month since the vfs(july 24) . As well as our classes has already started and it is creating a lot of stress and pressure among the students.
