It’s sounding to me like a cold case review which led to a hit on forensics, likely including DNA.
That means this man has been known to the police relatively recently and his DNA is in the system, or there’s been a familial link with one of his younger relatives who themselves has been picked up for something. The latter has solved cold cases in the past – there was an unsolved murder where the killer was identified years later as a result of his son being done for drink driving.
