“The plebs would absolutely love taxes if they weren’t influenced by far-right media outlets into hating them”
There, saved you from reading this pile of manure. And yes, Murdoch is mentioned at one point in the article lol.

Going from “we need to close tax loopholes and tax the rich” to “stopping people using farmland as a tax loophole is awful and we shouldn’t tax private schools ” is quite a change and really makes clear that it’s not about “what we need to do”, it’s all about causing outrage and making people feel slighted.

This seems like a pretty reasonable piece. No genuine revelations but a good reminder that newspaper crusades are directed by their owners, not their readers, and that a giant share of the UK press are owned by four billionaires, and used very blatantly to move opinion to suit their interests and prejudices. That includes contriving scare stories about the impact of policies (Oh no this school will close because of VAT on school fees!) which either never materialise, or which were going to happen anyway for some other reason.

I sort of think that the time has come to legislate that newspapers not be limited companies and that their owners have to be tax payers in the country they are published in. Sick of billionaires who contribute nothing to the country having such a hold on public opinion.

I commented on one of the budget posts at the time that we would be in for negative media over the budget and some the taxes as they hit the rich and most of the media is owned by the rich.
I really think the government needs to do an education piece on the farming IHT changes as it’s obvious how much misinformation is being pushed around by the richer farmers. Most through a little planning won’t have an issue handing down the farm. As farm land is no longer a tax loop hole the value will most likely drop bring more farms under the threshold.

One thing I’ve noticed of late is how the writer or journalist behind a story is starting to get replaced by a generic “Telegraph correspondents” or “Daily Mail reporters”. Suggests that the article is either being co-written with AI assistance or the journalists are becoming less willing to attach their names to opinion pieces already prepared.

(and the WFA cut, but nobody wants to hear that 27% of pensioners are millionaires, and 33% of children are impoverished)
