I don’t know that this needs to be a priority right now. Vague as it is, the threshold for calling a vote is the likelihood of it passing. And polling is nowhere near that threshold right now.
>In that event, there would be a simultaneous vote in the Republic of Ireland.
I don’t know that the GFA explicitly says this. It would make more sense for NI to pass a vote, which might take a few attempts. Before holding a referendum here, which would be necessary, as we would be changing our constitution.

Every party should be willing to challenge any attempt to undermine the word or spirit of the Good Friday Agreement.
Another headline intended to whip up sensation pre election. Nothing has changed, this is bare minimum stuff we should expect from an Irish government

My theory is SF got really close to being in government in 2020, that scared them so they are trying to bottle this election by saying as much shite as much as possible.

>Asked on Friday if Sinn Fein would consider a legal challenge against the British Government to force it to provide clarity on its decision making, Ms McDonald said Ireland had previously challenged the UK in the courts over legacy legislation.
>She said: “Would (a legal challenge) be our first option? No.
>“Is that option available to the Irish state? Yes.”
Some strange reactions in the comments here so far, to what is a deliberately inflammatory headline from a unionist newspaper. Can any of you tell me how she should have responded differently?

Eijits seeking a referendum by 2030. While we will need such, to have one when zero preparation or clear accommodation signs have been agreed island-wide well in advance will guarantee a loss and set back reunification for 30 years at least.
The actual vote should be a formality, once there is common agreement and familiarity with what would come from a positive vote.

Of course they are. How does this shock people still? They are Sinn Féin, the biggest republican party on the island and unity is a core tenant of theirs. I’d be more shocked if it wasn’t a priority (as it rightfully should be). I’ll be voting SF this election. The time was 4 yrs ago, but better late than never.

Was never a fan of SF but I almost feel sorry for their car crash demise now. Seems they got exposed for what they truly are and just reverted back to being the single issue party again.
The protest vote that boosted SF is still out there with no alternative. That’s not a good thing. We have 10 different almost identical parties.
Guessing they will push for voters in the north to be allowed elect the president here and push Gerry as the main candidate now.

Please. Just focus on housing, the justice system thats barely functional, medical care, education, disability rights etc.
I know this an important issue for people, but I’m just afraid if SF get into power and focus on this issue, they’ll use it as a scapegoat to blame why they couldn’t deliver their promises “because we were so focused on this” or it will distract us as a nation from the aforementioned issues.
If we’re bringing the north back, at least bring them into a country worth being apart of that can stand on its own two feet first.

Belfast here. Fuck up till you have a clear and costed plan for housing, healthcare, education, the civil service and defence. Otherwise it’ll be a brexit style mess and you’re unlikely to get a second good chance at this.

Still very hard to look past them calling for all countries to stop supplying Ukraine with weapons. How is that not a direct statement of support for Putin?

Sinn Fein are looking to talk about something other than housing, health, hate speech, free speech, immigration et cetera et cetera. They are getting solidly whipped by opposing candidates and these talking points. Their credibility has been decimated.
They need to change the narrative and capture media headlines to keep them in the news cycle. What better than to wheel out the Irish unity horse.
Even the Sinn Fein candidate talking about this must know that its pure rubbish.
Renegotiating the Good Friday agreement is never going to happen, Trump has absolutely no interest in the peace process and besides prominent Irish politicians and even more so UK politicians have personally pissed him off.
There is no public appetite up north for unification and the uncertainty it would bring. Maybe there will be in 10 years time buffer now I don’t think so. Who
Who knows maybe if the Brits keep pissing off the Russians and trigger a war we might get the North for free.
