    To you, they mean nothing

To the guy that comes twice a year to measure the device it gives an idea of how much energy was put through to heat

When I say they mean nothing to you, I don’t mean you don’t have the capability to understand. It means you need to track the history of the numbers as well, and correlate with readings from other floors, something that you probably don’t do

Those are “Heat Units”. All meters in the building (complex) will be read out once a year. And then the total usage of whatever heating material was used will be divided based on those units.

Example: You use 1000 units. The whole complex used 10000 units. You will pay 10% of the heating cost. (Simplified, as not all heating costs will be distributed based on usage etc).

You cannot conclude your usage based on those numbers.

For the other part. The 1-5 on the knob should correspond to different temperatures. For example 1 should equate to 12°C. So if it is warmer in the room, the valve will be closed and water will not run through the radiator. 3 would equate to 20°C.

Follow up question, if you are not home when the readings are done in your building, what happens to your bill?

I have always wondered with these things, do they just measure the heat coming off the radiator? My oven is close to my kitchen radiator, and it always shows the highest values even though I don’t use it that much.
