>__Compulsory tipping does not meet with unanimous approval among the Swiss. More than two-thirds do not want to include it in the price of their food, according to a survey published Sunday.__
>Nearly half of those polled (48%) are in favor of abolishing mandatory tips, according to the survey by 20 Minutes and Tamedia. They would prefer instead an increase in the basic salary of restaurant employees.
>Opposition to compulsory tipping was unanimous. The majority of those polled were against it, regardless of party, age or gender. The online survey was conducted on November 21 among 13,215 people from all language regions.
“Compulsory tipping” is simply not tipping…
I’m paying 24CHF for this pizza, there’s no fucking way that doesn’t cover all costs associated with running your restaurant
Also what the fuck are delivery fees for if not to pay for the delivery person?
If it ever comes to that I’ll just stop eating at restaurants.
Every restaurant now has this new card machine where you have to select “no tip” before you can proceed to the payment screen. Even shops in the Christmas market have it. I am already paying you CHF 15 for 6 Momos, how can you even ask for a tip over that amount when all you are doing is handing me food over a counter?
Tipping is a really stupid concept
Wtf is “compulsory tip”.. if it’s a tip, it is not compulsory. If it’s compulsory, it is not a tip…
I only tip when I genuinely feel the service was great, not overpriced, and it doesn’t feel forced. If I’m put in a position where I have to actively decline tipping or it’s even slightly pushed, I won’t tip at all. It has to be entirely my decision; if it’s suggested or pressured, I simply won’t do it even if otherwise I would.
I tip at my own discretion in the moment the service I received is above my expectations. I can tip a restaurant or an electrician, the fundamental point is **at my own discretion**.
People in Switzerland are salaried while in US waiters have a minimal base so tip is kind of fundamental for them. If tip become **mandatory** I will simply stop going to restaurants
Im laughing my but of here lmao.
I’m a service worker and our system doesn’t allow us to process a payment without somebody pressing one of the „tip“ options. We honestly don’t give a fuck if you tip or not unless you were super demanding during your service.
Don’t be a pussy, just press „no tip“.
17% tip is already included in every product in the restaurant.
I don’t think anyone wants this, including those who do it and get them in the US. If it’s mandatory, it’s not a tip either!
I went to a very nice restaurant in ZH a couple of weeks ago for lunch – I paid for some of my friends drinks, had a few courses and it came out to 175 CHF. The server was genuinely fantastic, so I gave him a 20 CHF tip and he expressed open disappointment. First time this happened to me in this country where people are normally happy if you throw them a fiver on that kind of bill.
I’m originally from the US and supported myself through university waiting tables and that shit should not exist here. If someone provides good service, I’m happy to give a little as thanks (also because they remember you & you can get some special favors) – but none of this 15-20% nonsense, please.
About 4-5 years ago, i had lunch at a Japanese sushi restaurant near Coop/Stadelhofen. As i was paying the bill, the cashier discreetly added 25sf as tips on the bill. Luckily, I caught it before paying. That was the last time I’ve eaten in this restaurant chain.
This is just a never ending game of obfuscating money and service transactions like with taxes, import tolls, social services and ultimately even destruction of the environment. A price is demanded, a service is provided, money changes hands. The point of making this as complicated and obtuse as possible is to trick people into not seeing cost up front and not seeing how money is redistributed, usually towards the top.
So what do you do? You check the price. If you don’t agree with the price, don’t buy. If you are tricked with hidden costs create legislation against it.
“Mandatory tip” is just a way to say “serving staff not paid a living wage”, so of course I don’t want that.
