My trip to Kosovo went great overall. I really enjoyed the cities and the local cuisine. However, just as I was about to go to the airport, the lady selling bus tickets informed me that one of my coins was fake. Since I had no cash on me, she insisted that we go to the ATM at the airport to withdraw money. At the airport, it turned out that the ATM charged a 5 Euro fee for withdrawals. Thankfully, I had emptied my bank account prior to the trip after hearing that Kosovo isn’t very accommodating to bank cards. Upon learning that I had no money whatsoever, she let me go. Still, I had a suspicion that it might have been a tourist scam to force me into using a shady ATM. Just to be sure., I went to another shop and tried to pay with the same coin, but nope – it was rejected too.

Only afterward did I learn that fake 2 Euro coins are quite common occurrence in Kosovo. However, unlike what I had read in articles, they do not seem to be widely accepted as payment anymore. I guess I just need to be careful next time.

Yeah, a lot of them here. Today the cashier at my local bakery refused my 1 Euro coin, saying it was fake. It’s honestly annoying as fuck more than anything.

Handing in a 2€ coin 🪙 to stores/ bakeries sucks, they check if its real or not & you feel bad about it😭
