I want to be respectful. If I have a phone out, or watch a movie on ipad, but using headphones, is that ok?

By “use of mobile phones prohibited” they actually refer to the use of mobile phones for *telephoning*, as quaint as this sounds. You shouldn’t make phone-calls in that section, is what they mean.

Your obligation not to make avoidable noise is covered by the more general “quiet zone” restriction.

All in all, unless you talk back to the film, it’s fine so long as you use headphones at a normal volume.

This means unnecessary sounds. Just be silent – no phone talking (but you can whisper and do short talk – people will not complain), no audio from games/videos/music. Headphones or mute your device and you free to do anything.

  4. “Use of mobile phones prohibited” is a really bad translation: the German “Ruhebereich” translates as “quiet zone” but in fact means that you need to avoid phone calls, ring tones, loud music (even with headphones) or “other noisy activities”.

You can use your phone — after all, more and more people these days have digital tickets, for example — or other device, but make sure that:

    * you have ringtones and other notifications switched to silent
    * you use earphones *and* turn the volume down so that other people can’t hear anything at all
    * you don’t take or make audio or video calls, either by phone or IM

It means avoid talking on the phone, and just generally be quiet.

Best of luck communicating this to the screaming kid who will likely end up sitting in the seat in front of you. (Yes, I speak from personal experience.)
