  1. Quelle surprise.

Only stubborn ideologues refused to understand that this is the case.

Reading the article, it all sounds completely speculative. End of the day nobody knows what will actually come out in the wash.

There’s a big difference between Mayfair and Lisbon, Knightsbridge and Mumbai – I’m sure a few will leave, but if you have £750 million in the bank, paying an extra £10 million a year in taxes is hardly a sacrifice.

So the people who already pay no money are going to leave and still pay no money, except this time not use our infrastructure for free

    And it’s speculative.

Fundamentally London is still a strong financial centre. The rich would already make more in NY or dubai. So the idea that even the slightest nudge would cause mass capital flight simply insnt dealing in reality.

Is the full scrapping of non-dom that bar? Who knows. Clearly from the article the OBR  doesn’t, and those who’ll be affected won’t give an answer against their interests.

If your basing your laws on ethics it should be scrapped. If your basing your laws on reality then a reduced rate is cautious.

Being against any change at all is utterly ideological, rather than good policy.

Yes but at least it means they have to go live somewhere else. That is a definite benefit. Flushing the toilet costs your water bill but you still do it.

Sounds rather speculative however it does interest me that it’s the Guardian publishing it.

I would be completely fine with this. Those ****ers take advantage of our services and use their money to push up property prices and influence our politics. They need to pay their share. It’s a scandal that this has gone on for so long.

London is overflowing with wealthy foreigners. This is not an insignificant issue.

Everyone who knows anything about the topic told anyone who asked that this would raise no money or indeed cause tax revenues to decline. That is precisely what has happened. Wealthy individuals have fled the country with their wealth, contacts and capacity to invest. Economic vandalism of the first order.

It was indeed a stupid political gesture thats backfired now.

Will Starmer now row back and not spend the money this was supposed to raise, no, I think not. Rather, and as will become the norm, he will simply target some other group of non Labour supporters to fund the ever increasing tax black hole that he has created.

I honestly don’t care, some things should be done because they make the country fairer, if it causes rich people to have to move then that’s their prerogative.

Personally I think it’s a bit stupid of super rich people to not live where they want just to hoard money but 🤷‍♂️

I’m sorry, but did you really say “Watching *may* conclude”?

Like, I’m sorry what? Its speculation on someone else’s speculation? This is just nonsense.

More billionaire reddiors worried that a policy that if I remember rightly is pretty unique globally, will impoverish them and their multi-billionaire mates…

You lot are a strange group and need to wake up.

    >About 74,000 people claimed non-dom status in 2022-23.

If 74K up stumps and leave, that will help the housing market.
