I think that idea ~~sailed~~ was sunk by a submarine in 1982

  2. Well thats a surprise. Doesn’t Argentina say this pretty much every other week?

Great we can send brave Andrew back there to defend it. They’ll think twice before sending child soldiers in this time.

    🥱
    I guessed they’d start bleating.

I fully agree with the return of the Chagos Islands, but I just can’t agree Argentina have a greater right to the Falklands.  And, considering their history, any talk of colonialism just makes me hope they never do succeed in persuading the UK to hand them over.

So . . . we need to hand over the Chagos Islands *and* the Falklands, and then other countries will like us?

  6. Jurassic_Bun on

    Posted this elsewhere but

    Well of course.

The argument made by the UN for the return of the Chagos Islands is the same one used by the UN’s decolonization committee for the return of the Falklands. It is also the argument shared by the coalition of countries that support each other. The argument basically being these locations are located closer to them and Britain settled/took/keeps them through imperial and colonial practices.

Doesn’t matter to the UN that the Falkland Islands people voted to remain British, they disregarded that and still argue that dialogue for the return of the islands should be opened.

The fact that the Chagos Islands are not being given to the Chagos people and that the Chagos people did not vote or decide the fate of the island decreases the legitimacy of the return. Instead of returning what was taken to the rightful owners, or having them decide, we are giving them to the closest country.

But the chagos islands weren’t returned. They were uninhabited and unclaimed when we go them. I don’t mind giving them over, but not to muaritius. Give it to the chaggosians, since we forcibly put them there.

It is a well known fact that the indigenous population of Falklands is originally from Spain.

OBS /s my understanding is that Falklands had no indigenous population when discovered.

Broke ass Argentina has absolute nothing to demand for. Cry baby Milei went to the West and ask for handout after handout to prevent the country from going into full shit.

  10. Abject-Direction-195 on

I’ve always thought that the argument that they are the closest country is flawed. I mean Chile and Uruguay are literally on their border and they don’t harp on how parts of those countries should be Argentina in the same hateful venom.

  11. The UK Government has just set the precedent of giving away territory without so much as consulting parliament, so I’d be nervous if I was an Islander.

  12. GenghisKhant_ on

Argentina can’t afford to government their own state, forget adding other territories.

Educate me, how does UK benefit from these islands ? Considering our military are stretched and depleted, isn’t this more of a burden ?

They just need to give Keir a few free gifts and they might get lucky

Labour are full of apologetic anti colonial English haters sponsored by Paymaster Ali

  16. Just because they’re closer doesn’t mean it’s theirs. Argentina has no claim over the Falklands other than proximity. Give it a rest.

  17. AttemptFirst6345 on

They didn’t move any Argentinians off the islands though.

  18. thedisablednonce on

I mean they have a point the natives French/Germans/Spanish/Italians of Argentina deserve this small island thousands of miles away from Argentina proper.

The nasty Anglo colonialists need to learn the British empire is gone.

  19. pork_cylinders on

I used to say we should give them back until I found out we’ve had them since before Argentina was a country. As far as I understand it, Argentina has never had sovereignty over the Falklands.

  20. Ninereedss on

Never going to happen and I’d be perfectly happy if we had to use force, again, to keep it that way.

  21. I would imagine Spain will be saying the same regarding Gibraltar.

  22. piyopiyopi on

The worrying thing is. If the Argentinian football association donates a night with Messi to Kier…

  23. Conscious-Bed4876 on

Argentina as a country didn’t exist when the British founded Argentina

  24. Asleep_Mountain_196 on

Argies are always welcome to have another crack at it. Would result in an even swifter humiliation than last time.

  25. Mrmrmckay on

So the people of the Falklands voted to remain part of the UK with something crazy like 99.5% majority but Argentina says fuck that we know better

  26. HorizonBC on

Argentina just needs reminding the UK is a nuclear armed power, and it will defend the self determination of its people with full force.

Oh if you’re feeling brave then go ahead and hurt yourselves again.
