GIGA Storage Belgium is gearing to build the largest battery energy storage system in continental Europe. The Green Turtle battery park on the Rotem industrial estate in the town of Dilsen-Stokkem, northeastern Belgium, will also be even larger than previously announced.
Initially, GIGA Storage Belgium announced that it would build a battery with a power output of 600 MW and storage capacity of 2,400 MWh. It obtained an irrevocable permit for the construction mid April.
However, following “technical optimization”, the project proponents have expanded the project to 700 MW/2,800 MWh, which is equivalent to the average daily energy consumption of 385,000 households.
Green Turtle will be built on an industrial estate that was previously home to a zinc factory. In the past, there were already plans for the realization of a battery park at this location by another energy company before Giga Storage acquired the land from the zinc factory owners.
The facility is strategically positioned next to Elia’s new 380 kV high-voltage substation. It will play a vital role in the energy transition within Belgium, optimizing the use of abundant solar and wind energy and reducing the nation’s reliance on gas power plants.
GIGA Storage Belgium has joined hands with multiple partners to build the project. Stadsbader Contractors is responsible for the construction works, Stockholm-based Sweco has taken on the technical design, while Tractebel, the owner’s engineer, will provide technical support to GIGA Storage Belgium.
The project partners started working on a preparatory study in late August. Construction is expected to start in 2025, with an estimated completion in 2028.
“The agreement concluded with our contractors…comprises an important milestone. This is a flagship project for us in Belgium and an important project in realising the energy transition in Europe, where access to large-scale electricity storage plays a vital role,” says Joeri Siborgs, General Manager of GIGA Storage Belgium.

I hope they’re building a dam. 2 lakes at different heights with a pump between them is the most efficient battery. I hope it’s one of those.
Oh wait, no. The Coo lake already exists. They’re talking about lots of lithium and other chemicals. Will never be as efficient as a lake.
Geography must allow it too by the way. Can’t build pressure when there is no elevation change

That’s quite big. Very nice.
Ulyks on
Would be nice to know which batteries they will be using. On another project, they mention lithium-ion batteries.
LFP would probably be cheaper but perhaps they want higher capacity…
