Yep. I don’t work for them but in manufacturing for a small manufacturer that’s keeping itself afloat against some global challenges. But I just got my compulsory redundancy notice 10 days ago, for 23rd December – along with 25% of the workforce. Hard to imagine how this hasn’t added to a long list of challenges already present.
It’ll be the nail in the coffin for the bread and butter of our economy. It’s a disgrace when the likes of Starbucks, Amazon and Google are continually allowed to operate and make billions with practically zero tax.

Awful. Feel for the staff in all industries that are being made redundant due to these policies. Hope you all find something.

Will be an extra 500,000+ people unemployed easily spread across retail, hospitality and manufacturing. Transitions to part time work from FTE is what will happen too, it’s what I would do owning any business with low margins at risk to slumps.
They’ve slowed an economy down and this is only the start.

>Student numbers are also down with the letter pointing out that there have been challenges around “international student recruitment, increasing staff costs since the pandemic” and “unsustainable levels of funding for Scottish and other UK students”.
Definitely wouldn’t have happened without the NI increases.

If it costs £120mn to run per month and they’ve got 50,000 students, that’s £28,800 per student per year. Which roughly breaks even for international student and is obviously significantly more than what home students pay. Just funny to me how much of the push to reduce international student migration ignored this funding issue.

My Dad just got notice that everyone at his company (15 people) are having their hours reduced, effectively losing 1 weeks pay every month.
Literally word for word were told was because of the tax hikes.
Here is where I say I’m angry for voting for labour, but I guess I’m angry for voting for the establishment and expecting change.

They get thousands per student, sell research etc and help from the government for decades. Other than mismanagement or greed can somebody explain to me why universities are now “struggling”
ilsecolo on
This is bullshit.
Multiple universities have announced multimillion pound short falls this year due to drops in international students.
Edinburgh announced in August that despite a £2bn surplus they were going to have to make spending cuts due to changes in the international market and the government not increasing home fees (there was a times article – can’t link at the moment).
Now they are doing it but claiming it is because of the budget.

Yeah im sure its everything to do with NI tax rise and nothing to do with plummeting overseas student numbers.

Extremely misleading headline which falsely implies the NI increase is the direct cause of the layoffs. The UoE’s media statement says:
> The university costs £120m each month to run. In the context of the recent sector challenges around international student recruitment, increasing staff costs since the pandemic, and the unsustainable levels of funding for Scottish and other UK students, our outgoings are consistently higher than our income.
>
> In response to this situation and recent developments with regards to National Insurance, we have concluded that we need to take a series of actions, which will include selective voluntary and, if unavoidable, compulsory redundancies.
Very clearly says that budget shortfalls already existed prior to the NI increase.

I think this reasoning is bs. All year Edinburgh has been claiming they need budget cuts, the taxes might hurt them, I doubt severely, but no chance has it instigated this.

1.2% NI rise that comes to effect IN APRIL next year. 1.2%.
I call bullshit on any company citing NI rise as a reason to let people go. Especially 25% of workforce as one of the commenter said here. They’re just using it as a reason to sack people without being blamed. Pure greed.
Why are international student applications down again?

I don’t know at what point the politicians and above all, the people will face the harsh truth. The public welfare system in this country is just not sustainable anymore. Thinking that the tax hikes are just “temporary pain” for long term gain, is fooling ourselves. The sooner we get out of the state of denial, the better it is for the country. Politicians cannot solve the country’s problems
