It’s a great initiative and I hope that I can be rolled out nationally at some point.

Great news. Waiting for some miserable people to say their kids don’t get free meals as they are lower middle class and therefore no one should get them.

The time I felt most distance from another person on Reddit was a guy that would always come into posts about kids getting free school dinner and argue against them.
Didn’t matter if the post was about kids not eating for days he didn’t care.
I grew up on a shit hole estate and remember a kid being in my house and I opened the fridge and he’s eyes got wide and he asked whose birthday it was, the fridge was just normally stocked.
I cooked some sausages and fish fingers he wolfed them down like they were Michelin star meals.
When my mum came in he looked like he shat his pants because he thought we’d get in trouble for eating the food.
It’s not a matter of the kids eat school dinners and the country goes bankrupt… I just can’t imagine knowing kids might not eat at home properly and knowly depriving them of school dinners.

We shouldn’t be having this need in 2024, but it needs to be standard across the UK.
I have gripes about my taxes going up to pay for pointless shit I don’t want, but if money needs to go to pay for lunches for kids, go for it.
Tbh it should be for secondary schools too. Mine, albeit going back over 20 years, was genuinely segregated at lunch times between the poor kids on lunch tickets and those that weren’t.
The amount of money we piss away on corrupt projects and ivory tower politicians, and we still can’t / won’t feed kids a half decent meal for lunch at school.

Very welcoming news overall. Not the biggest fan of Sadiq Khan but his universal free school meals for primary students was beneficial.
