  1. It is yes. And I am sincerely sorry for your experience.

When I moved out of my WG, I witnessed the same. When I gave my landlady multiple options as new tenant, she underlined that she prefers germans overall.

You’ve got the option to go for a lawsuit as the situation can be understood as “Discrimination as a foreigner in tenancy law”, but I wouldn’t waste my time with such human crap.

I wish you all the best!!

  2. That is not only racist but also illegal. You can go to a lawyer and sue. (Allgemeine Gleichstellungsgesetz)

    Yes, of course it’s racist.

There are no legal consequences unless you get that A) from the landlord themselves and B) the landlord is a commercial entity or has more than X flats to rent (I think something more than 10 or similar).

Biggot and close minded. Many times they are old and don’t speak English or another language. Old people are also more easily annoyed so social incompatibilities are more even higher barriers.

Some people are fucking stupid sometimes, you should look at it as dodging a bullet.

Guys, he can fight it, but still does not have to get the apartment

  8. A friend was looking for the apartment in the vicinity of Heidelberg – Mannheim, and according to his experience there is almost no chance to get apartment from the German landlord. If they see foreign name – they just delete email without reading it.

He has finally rented from Turkish landlord.

  9. Yes it is. It may be because of bad experiences in the past or whatever, but now even giving you the chance is still racist

Racist. And also illegal!! Sorry this is happening to you. It probably doesn’t help that in Germany, homeowners can choose from a variety of potential tenants and besideracism, sexism and abelism, there are unfortunately a lot of issues.

I dont think so. Magbe the owned had bad experience with foreigners.

My past apparment owner (aka landlord) was very dissatisfied with his indian  tenants because they were always cooking curry and the whole house was smelling very intense.  She had to clean her apartment very thoroughly many time before she could rent it to somemone else. Now she only rents to europeans…so that is that.

Maybe I am putting it in unpolite way, but recently a lot of indians are complaining

Let’s be honest. Aren’t you facing racism in india?

And still none complain, in fact exercise the same. But to weaponise this word and use it in the first world countries to achieve the goal makes me uncomfortable, knowing that people have preferences and not necessarily everyone accommodates you.

Note: I am not denying racism but not in favour of painting everything with the same brush

A former client of mine was lamenting about how difficult it was to find someone to rent her inherited apartment in Berlin. Curious why it was so difficult, I asked where she was advertising it.

“Oh no, we definitely get enough applications. But I don’t want any foreigners. They must be German. It’s just better that way, you know?”

I suggested that it would be a good chance for her to practice her English, as, well…she hired me to be her English teacher…and also maybe to give her another chance to rephrase herself and realize that she was speaking with a foreigner right this fucking second.

“Oh that doesn’t bother me. I can do business in English. It’s just that I want Germans.” Splat.

Young (mid-30s), manager at a large bank, went to university, born and raised Berliner. They’re everywhere.

The amount of times I’ve heard versions of “Der Schwarze hat das angefasst, bleib weg” since Germans have started invading my country for the holidays is sickening.

Of course it is, my friend also faces a similar thing. The agent will take all his details and later told him they can’t give him their house because he is not a German passport holder and some will deny him due to his name ‘Muhammed’ so sad and pathetic. I hope the German government step in to solve this madness.
