i mean some democratic leaders are ( look at many a US president assassinating leaders of other countries and doing other illegal stuff that if anyother group did would be called terrorism )

being a democratic leader dosent make it so you cant be a terrorist, all it means is someone voted for you

  2. AssistanceOverall121 on

Let him define Terrorism then? Apparently there is a definition where Israel doesnt end up as a Terrorist State while Palestinians do.

  3. JayManty on

Leave it up to our “pro-democratic pro-western” government to go against the ICC

  4. Fickle-Message-6143 on

ICC doesn’t procute terrorist but war criminals, which can be any soldier, terrorist, minister, general, president or pm.

  5. Tiny-Wheel5561 on

We don’t have to play the double game for uncle Sam by excusing war crimes.

    This isn’t r/worldnews.

  6. Being democratically elected is completely irrelevant. It doesn’t and shouldn’t give anyone a free pass to commit war crimes.

If he said that nothing Netanyahu did is a war crime, that might be a valid argument. If he pointed out the ICC isn’t prosecuting American war criminals, that would be valid criticism. But the fact that Netanyahu was democratically elected is completely irrelevant to the job of the ICC.

Fuck our Western hypocrisy. Funny enough, the United Nations, the World Bank, the International Criminal Court, and many other organizations and agencies were created by us for a rule-based order— for thee, though not for me

Then we wonder why the world hates us or doesn’t sympathize with us, and why anti-Western alliances like the BRICS are emerging. This is the answer: we play the world into believing we adhere to rules, but that’s only when it suits us, not when it doesn’t. Sure, it’s all realpolitik, but let’s not act surprised if fewer and fewer nations adhere to rules created by us or values promoted by us

How can Europe be credible and ever be united when, even in foreign relations, we don’t all have the courage to condemn, not all Israelis, but an arrogant, ignorant child murderer?

Hitler was a democratically elected leader and he would’ve been on trial hadn’t he shot himself/fled to Argentina/insert theory here.

  9. False-Protection6550 on

Europe and the west are certainly having a terrible time with geopolitics but “you can’t arrest a world leader if they are elected” is fucking disgusting.

A huge statement of authoritarian desire. He just said that Vladimir Putin cannot be considered a criminal in any way.

  10. kitilvos on

Yes, when you are a genocidal piece of shit who is responsible for the deaths of over 17000 children then you should absolutely be treated on the level of a terrorist leader. That is exactly what you deserve. And you can be that even if you were democratically elected, the two facts are not mutually exclusive.

One of the least popular PMs in the EU, mind you.

Anyway, Netanyahu & Gants were charged on the basis of controlled starvation, not terrorism. There was a third leader from Hamas who actually was charged for terrorism but people love to pick & choose.

  12. So if a democratic leader under the guitar of defending their nation van start a ‘special ‘ military operation in another area determined to be a region of their own country can kill a bunch of ‘terrorists’ or Nazis antisemites should not be equated to terrorists, what is the difference between Russia’s Putin defending Russians, Israel’s Netanyahu defending Israels, Hamas leader defending Palestinians.

  13. It’s shocking that for some you cannot be called ‘terrorist’ but somehow that allows killing 40,000 innocent people in two countries. What would make you a terrorist for these people?

Terrorising people makes you a terrorist,; no matter if you are a leader of a terrorist group or the president of a sovereign country. As Putin, Obama, Bush were also terrorists, let’s not ignore that.

  14. md_youdneverguess on

They conveniently left out that Nethanjahu also tried to undermine Israels democracy with his justice reform. Something about glass houses and throwing rocks

  15. NARVALhacker69 on

The shining democracies of the UK and France were absolute colonial monsters a century ago, they committed unspeakable acts, and yet they were democracies, thinking that just because you have elected leaders suddenly you have free reign on third world countries is pure colonial mindset

  16. Kaya_kana on

If you commit the same crime it doesn’t matter if you’re a democratically elected leader or a terrorist.

  17. balamb_fish on

    “Democratic leaders can’t be terrorists”

Who won the 2006 Gaza elections?

  18. Does he know that Adolf Hitler also was democratically elected?

  19. terracotta-daddy on

It is shameful that the ICC is going after Israel for defending itself from terrorists. They are rewarding Hamas tactics of using the civilian population as a human shield.

  20. NJH_in_LDN on

The method of ascension to power is irrelevant, the actions taken is what the deciding factor is.

  21. Jaded-Ad-960 on

This line of argument is always funny. The point of a democracy is that leaders can get prosecuted and/or removed from office when they do crimes because they’re bound by the rule of law. You’re not immune from international law, just because you were elected.

  22. Rosu_Aprins on

If he’s so revolted by it, he can help Bibi present his case to the court and prove his innocence.

He can also convince him to drop the legislation draft to ban the establishment of a state commission of inquiry into the October 7 attack, there should be no reason to stop something that would expose more of the crimes committed by hamas.

We live in a rule based order, so they should follow international rules, right?

  23. A democraticaly elected war criminal, who is prelonguing the war to not go into prison in is own country.

    Here fixed it.

  24. FudgeAtron on

The fact the ICC never requested Israeli input before this move, the fact that Israeli courts were ignored, the fact that Israel doesn’t even recognise the ICC’ authority, are all evidence that the ICC and other organisations were never about RuLeS bAsEd OrDeR, but about enforcing the rulings of European courts on other nations.

If Israel is not consulted at all, how can we be a sovereign state? If foreign courts can that we do not recognize can overrule our own laws and bypass our legal systems, how can we be independent?

Many people in Israel went out into the street to keep the courts independent, for over a year. But to Europe that was irrelevant, we are considered an inferior nation in the eyes of Europe it is clear. Our courts, our systems, were ignored, why should I give any of time to courts which view us as an inferior nation/state?

  25. Rogthgar on

Democratically elected leaders are perfectly capable of committing warcrimes, the warcrimes bit is what the ICC is interested in…

  26. Proof-Hamster645 on

So democratically elected leaders are to be exempt from committing war crimes and human rights violations?

  27. therealwavingsnail on

While Bibi is a grade A asshole who should be in jail, any Israeli leader would have to fight a war against Hamas and Hezbollah. Even the staunchest progressive. After Oct7, there simply wasn’t any other option.

Now how do you fight that war? Would a leader with no ulterior motives towards staying in power fare better? How would the average Reddit commenter do?

  28. Diligent-Ad-5494 on

Its absolutely ridicious that they are throwing entire starvation on Israel only. If iam not blind, they sent a lot of food convoys in, even if they temporaly closed border because of safety.

Hamas loots every convoy that goes in, while having massive stockpile of food. Who rules Gaza? Hamas, so it isnt Israel thing to cover.

Ignoring half of the evidence is s joke. Entire ICC should resign, they are clearly want to cover Hamas and their masters in Tehran.

  29. CumulativeFuckups on

The Western outlook on the ICC goes as follows Russia, China, Africa, Arabs bad they should be prosecuted by the ICC for their actions.
Because they’re not our friends but the people we like can’t be criminals and the ICC is wrong to issue arrest warrants for them

  30. Always great when the West is acting like an authoritarian country. If we start to attack our highest courts then let’s ignore them completely. Politicians should shut the fuck up and let courts do their thing. Just follow the rules and believe in the system you build.

Otherwise don’t talk about Putin as a war criminal or attack Assad for killing his own people. The deal was to move away from imperialism and that the richest and strongest nations would follow the same rules like everyone else. The US can behave that way but Europe? 2050 will China act the same and everyone in Europe will cry and talk about our rules based order.

  31. Sir_Henry_Deadman on

Pretty sure a lot of war criminals get democratically elected in the beginning

  32. Enginseer68 on

During times of crisis, we see each other’s true color

How do the normal people of Czech feel about this? Do they really want to support a war criminal no matter what?

Czech is on the wrong side of history on this one
