Putin wants to have control of Kurst Oblast, before Trump becomes President. Putin is willing to do whatever it takes, to overwhelm Ukraine’s military, sacrificing as many soldiers as needed, to accomplish his goal.

Still not enough. Look at a topo map of the area. Besides the political objective and the severing of the rail line the Ukrainians picked an *extremely* good area to defend. They dug in there like a tick and it’s going to be a long slog for Russia to dig them out.
And remember – that’s 60k who aren’t in Ukraine. Front lines outside of the Donbas are starting to get pretty thin. Just saying….

Ultimately it’s better for the Ukrainians to grind down Russians *in Russia* than in Ukraine. It’s related to the soundness of letting the Ukrainians regularly smash Russian military assets deep *in Russia* rather than to try to pick them off one-by-one as they come into Ukraine (cf. “kill the archer, not the arrow”).
Any collateral damage and UXO related to the fighting there degrade Kursk oblast and wholly become *the Russians’* problem (if they can even be аrѕеd to clean up or rejuvenate this part of their oh-so-precious homeland).

Cool. 60 days until they’ve lost that much. Probably less.

I really hope Biden and NATO partners thought about this moment and prepared for it. I know it’s a wishful thinking but I really hope so. If Ukraine sustains Putin’s campaign this winter, then I am sure things will quickly get a lot worse for Russia and Putin.

Once again, the move into Kursk was clearly the right choice to make. That’s 60k not in Ukraine, and a forced meat grinder for Russian political purposes.

And Ukraine now has the go-ahead to lay mines which likely were already deployed to Kursk prior to being officially announced.
