It’s not a great headline but think of it this way. There is a perception that local authority housing is generational and that there is a reasonable prospect of kids growing up, going on the housing list and getting housed in the same locality as their family, friends and support structure.
On the other hand, middle class people that work hard to afford to live in that area find that their kids have no prospect of buying a first home anywhere near them, thereby forcing the kids into commuter towns with no family or friends nearby.
Whatever the truth, there’s a decent cohort of voters in that constituency that are buying what he’s selling, even though he has no chance of making any difference.

When did “middle-class” become a dirty word?
There have been countless politicians over the years promoting policies that benefit “the working-class” to pander to voters in “working-class” neighbourhoods. This guy is simply playing the same BS game but in a different constituency.

I live in his constituency. The majority of new home developments are either 3-storey houses at 800k – 1m each or social housing.
I think he will do well off the back of his message

I mean, isn’t this what Richard Boyd Barrett called for in the leaders debate last week?
Social housing only becomes equitable when it’s available to all. Middle class households pay for everything and get very little back. The squeezed middle.

The squeezed middle is a legitimate concern….the messaging isn’t right though.

In fairness at least he’s being honest. Too many politicians claim they care about the wc but they don’t in reality.

If he said ‘middle income’ it might not be so bad but talking about class in this day and age is rather crass.

To be fair it is a clunky statement and looks daft on a poster. But the squeezed middle class families are finding it hard in Ireland right now. Usually two parents working, paying for all services not receiving any government supports or schemes because they’re not eligible. And it is their children who will have to pay for education and emigrate eventually. Their families will never be eligible for housing, medical cards or college fees. But yet have to pay high taxes for rubbish infrastructure and poor services.
