Then they’ll expand to be able to fit more passengers, so they’ll allow more flights, and fill up the new expansion and need to expand again.

    Repeat

Edit since is apparently a controversial viewpoint: the point is that this problem will never actually be solved.

Headline makes it sound like we need to expand the British Empire

Why not look at better working with other airports rather than expanding that one. There are six airports at least around London – I am sure they are not all working at capacity.

What they should do is build a high speed underground shuttle connecting Heathrow and Gatwick to create a megahub.

Rather than keep trying to expand London airports they should expand Birmingham airport and connect it with high speed rail. Think sub 1 hr travel time to central London, so it’s still in catchment for Londoners, but also the Midlands area, and further North, like Manchester are connected directly by rail. Most of the UK doesn’t really benefit from the London airports, I get that London has international prestige, but equally you could still use a medium size airport like Birmingham as a London overspill.

    Must, or you want to?

Not sure flights are quite what we need more of right now

  7. Stick all the LGW and LHR cargo flights into the newly refurbished Manston Airport (Kent International) and then you create lots of extra passenger capacity without huge building work…

Doesn’t help that the space inside the terminal has been swallowed up by thousands of fucking shops. There used to be such a great amount of seating space both on the ground floor and up top (where the McDonald’s used to be, now Pret). Nowadays, it is *always* fucking packed — and I really don’t think it’s because of runway space.
